Latin

In this course, scholars are introduced to the Latin language through engaging songs, stories, and art, making the learning process both meaningful and enjoyable. The curriculum, designed by the University of Dallas, emphasizes a classical approach that builds a strong foundation in vocabulary, grammar, and linguistic structure. Through this study, scholars gain not only language skills but also a deeper appreciation for the history, literature, and culture of the classical world.

Why Latin

Latin holds a central place in the Excalibur curriculum, not merely as a useful academic exercise but because understanding the language of Western literary, legal, and philosophical tradition is worthwhile and enduring knowledge.

  • Direct Access to Great Texts - Our Latin program prepares scholars to engage with classical texts in the language in which they were written, deepening understanding in ways no translation can fully achieve.

  • Mastery of English - Over 60% of English words derive from Latin. Scholars develop precise understanding of English vocabulary, grammar, and syntax.

  • Disciplined Thinking - Latin trains the mind in careful analysis, pattern recognition, and logical reasoning, skills that transfer to mathematics, science, and argumentation.

  • Connection to Civilization - Latin is the language of Roman law, medieval philosophy, Renaissance science, and the American founding. To study it is to understand our intellectual roots.
